Carlo Crocco, from an Italian family of watchmakers, designed his first watch in 1967. In 1980 Carlo established his own company, MDM Geneva. Later that year Carlo created the first Hublot watch-a gold porthole (hublot) shaped watch case with brushed and polished metal on a black rubber bracelet. This was the first watch in the history of watchmaking to have a natural black rubber bracelet.  Within months the Hublot watch was a royal favorite of the Kings of Greece, Spain and the Prince of Monaco.

In 2004, Jean-Claude Biver -  formerly of the Audemars Piquet, Omega and Swatch Group became Hublot's CEO. The following year the Hublot "Big Bang" chronograph was introduced in Basel, Switzerland.

Hublot's distinctive rubber band is specially manufactured to resists cracks or stains. The band is chemically fused with steel for strength.
