It is hard to imagine for man in the early 3rd millennium that not so many centuries ago, clocks had only an hour hand - who cared for minutes? Furthermore, the "individual time," a time-keeping device that could be carried around and that really everyone could afford, became only available in the 19th century.
Today, precision timekeeping has become a part of our life - we make appointments for 11:20, and we get nervous when our partner hasn't shown up by 11:22.
The timepiece, be it mechanical or quartz-driven, on our desktop or on our wrist has become an indispensable instrument of modern life.
